Do you suffer chronic pain from arthritis, or extreme nausea from chemotherapy? You may have tried other pain-relieving drugs, but have yet to find one that actually works for you. Or maybe you’re afraid to try pain relievers because of the high addiction rate and possible side effects. You may be surprised to learn that cannabidiol, or CBD, an oil found in the cannabis plant (yes,
that cannabis), is known to have several healing properties. In fact, it’s been used for healing chronic pain as far back as 2900 B.C. in China. Cannabis isn’t just a recreational drug for people looking for a good time!
If you’re unsatisfied with your previous pain relief methods and want to try something different, Dr. Hasan Badday and the Pacific Pain and Regenerative Medicine team can help you determine whether this avenue of pain treatment is right for you. We have two locations in Southern California: Irvine and Los Angeles.
How CBD oil works to target and reduce pain
Our bodies have a system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is responsible for regulating several functions, including appetite, sleep, the immune system response, and pain. Neurotransmitters produced in this system are called endocannabinoids, which attach to cannabinoid receptors found in the nervous system. This attachment has been found to reduce inflammation in the brain and nervous system by impacting endocannabinoid activity, which helps reduce chronic pain.
Because CBD oil isn’t as concentrated as marijuana, the exposure won’t produce the high that smoking marijuana does, nor will it have any influence over your state of mind. Rather, it enables your body to more effectively use its own endocannabinoids.
In fact, none of the CBD oil products that Dr. Badday offers his patients contain even trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive cannabinoid that’s responsible for the marijuana “high.”
Patients suffering from arthritis-related pain have reported greater levels of comfort from the use of CBD oil. In addition, patients undergoing chemotherapy for cancer have reported reduced levels of nausea and increased appetite. Studies of the effectiveness of CBD oil are ongoing, so it’s important to schedule an evaluation with Dr. Badday to discuss your medical history and ensure that this pain relief approach is right for you.
