What is IV Therapy? What conditions has IV therapy been approved for?

Intravenous or IV therapy is an option for providing pain relief for conditions ranging from fibromyalgia and neuropathy to postoperative pain. The therapy is performed in office. IV therapy has been approved to treat pain associated with:

  • Centralized pain following a stroke
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
  • Diabetic peripheral polyneuropathy
  • Facial Pain & Trigeminal Neuralgia
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Headaches
  • Neuropathy
  • Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy

How does the procedure work?

During this very simple procedure, an IV is placed in the patient’s arm and the medication is fed through a drip combined with a basic saline solution. The pain killing medication could be any of the following:

  • Bisphosphonates
  • Clonidine
  • Dexmedetomidine
  • Intravenous Immunoglobulin
  • Ketamine
  • Lidocaine
  • Magnesium

The treatment can last anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour. Dr. Badday will choose the best medicine to treat the patient, who will be weighed to determine the correct dosage. The patient will be monitored throughout the treatment. Clinical studies show long-lasting effects of IV therapy including a reduction in the number of headaches experienced in a month and patients suffering from diabetic neuropathy report significant decreases in chronic pain.

What is the most common use of IV pain treatment?

IV therapy for pain is most commonly used in a postoperative setting, when the patient is not yet able to take medications orally or in a patient control analgesia system, where he or she can press a button to release a dose of medication. Dr. Badday uses this procedure for the treatment of chronic pain associated with other disorders. Patients may need to make multiple visits for medication, but the benefits should be felt immediately on each visit. If you think that your pain could be managed with IV therapy, make an appointment with Dr. Badday today for a consultation.
