What are stem cells?

Stem cells are the cells that can regenerate tissue in the body and reduce the effects of arthritis and musculoskeletal issues. Stem cells can be divided into two types of cells: autologous and allogeneic. Autologous stem cells are obtained typically from bone marrow found in the pelvis through a small incision. Allogeneic stem cells are derived from donor tissue and do not require harvesting from one’s own bone marrow or fat cells. There are two things that make stem cells unique. First, they can self-regenerate, which means they can divide and create more stem cells of the same kind. Second, they can mature or differentiate into specialized cells that perform a specific function, such as skin, muscle, or blood cells. Technological advances have allowed medicine to harness stem cells and their regenerative attributes to help patients heal and relieve pain and discomfort.

What do stem cell injections treat exactly?

Stem cell injections provide a non-invasive alternative to surgery for patients suffering from a variety of painful conditions. The injections can treat many conditions including, but not limited to:

  • Degenerative disc disease of the spine
  • Degenerative joint disease of the hip or shoulder
  • Arthritis
  • Meniscus tears
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Achilles tendon injuries
  • Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain

How does the stem cell treatment process work?

Stem cells can be collected and injected to assist damaged tissue, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bone to heal itself. If autologous stem cells are used bone marrow is aspirated, or extracted, from a patient’s hip or other parts of the body. Then, the bone marrow is centrifuged, separating the stem cells from other components in the marrow. The final product is injected directly into the affected disc or joint. If allogeneic stem cells are used a donated allograft is placed directly in the affected disc or joint. Image guidance is used for complete accuracy and precision during the injection. The entire procedure is completed in about an hour and can be performed in an office or ambulatory surgery setting.
